GPU undervolting: principles, limits and validation

Undervolting aims for a better balance between frequency, voltage, temperature and power consumption. The potential depends on the chip, cooling, power limit and workload.

What we are actually aiming for

Depending on the card, undervolting may reduce power consumption or temperature while maintaining useful clock speeds. It does not guarantee an FPS gain or a specific temperature before measurement.

Validate with different workloads

A curve that is stable in one benchmark may fail in another game. Validation should combine a controlled load, monitoring and workloads close to the customer’s actual use.

  • No visual artefacts
  • Consistent effective clock speeds
  • Temperatures and power consumption
  • Stability across different workloads

Keep a way to roll back

The final profile must be restorable or possible to disable. Important values are recorded so that you do not depend on undocumented settings.
